Eric (Colonial Saw): Hi, I’m Eric with Colonial Saw. Next to me is David Bolt from NextStep of West Michigan. David, can you tell us a little bit about what NextStep is?

David (NextStep of West Michigan): Yeah—so NextStep is a faith-based social enterprise nonprofit. We offer skills training in wood manufacturing, and now we have a carpentry pathway for adults and for youth in our community who are experiencing barriers to employment.

Eric: So it’s not just, say, high school students—you also offer programs for the broader community.

David: That’s correct. Anybody who’s having a tough time finding a job—or finding the skills they need to get the job—can participate. Our focus is the wood manufacturing industry. We’ve got this beautiful wood shop here at 101 Garden in downtown Grand Rapids where we do training.

Eric: David, we’re sitting in front of a Striebig that you acquired—it’s been almost a year.

David: That’s right.

Eric: Can you tell us why you chose Striebig, and why you chose to partner with Colonial?

David: Sure. As an organization, we knew we had tight space here in our 101 Garden training facility. We had some panel saws that were connected to our table saws, and it was a chore for students to put panels up on carriages and try to crosscut plywood.

We also knew we were going to move more into cabinet manufacturing and box manufacturing with our training programs. So we wanted an upright panel saw. We studied the market and really felt that Striebig was the best in the market.

Eric: Roger, you’re the instructor of this program. Can you tell us a little bit about the impact the saw has had on the school?

Roger (Instructor): Yeah. Actually, it’s pretty interesting—we hadn’t had any exposure to a panel saw like this at all. Once we learned it, we started finding other ways to use it more efficiently.

I think we went from barely using it to using it almost every day. Now we can find a way to cut something on it—whether it’s big pieces or small pieces. The high school students have learned it really well.

Like, we had a guy today—we just said, “You need to make those cuts on the panel saw.” “Yep.” “You know how to do it?” “Yep.” And away he goes. We can just watch him out of the corner of our eyes, and he runs that perfectly now.

Eric: That’s wonderful to hear. So Roger, we’re sitting in front of the Striebig that you’ve had for almost a full year. If another school or wood education program wanted a better cutting solution, why would you recommend a Striebig?

Roger: What I like about it is that it’s very simple to operate. I can teach a student to operate this in about half a dozen instructions. The sequence is important, so you do have to monitor it—but once they get the sequence, it works perfectly.
